Radical Realignment Plan for the NHL
All of this went down last night while I was on call, so I couldn't even read up on it or see what it's all about. Anyone else here have thoughts on the changes?

Personally, I like the realignment and I like that every team gets to play every team. I don't like 2 things in particular. I still hate that you play the teams in your conference more often than others. I also don't like how they are doing the first round of the playoffs. I think they need to consider a wildcard bit like the NFL does because you'll have a team who is 4th in one conference make the playoffs, but a team with a better record but is 5th in another conference gets screwed. Also, the two conferences with 7 teams have it a little easier for making the playoffs because there is one less team to fight against.

I do however like the idea and I LOVE how they will do the rest of the playoffs. The reseeding without conference bias is a great idea, in my opinion and can give us a Detroit v Chicago SCF or Pitts vs. Wash and those types of interconference rivalries can shine on the big stage.

I kinda like it too, but I do agree that if a certain conference has better teams in a particular year, the "middle" teams in that conference does get screwed. I do also like the idea (that they're not using) of a wild card like the NFL and MLB.

I just wonder if this is Bettman's work because given his past history, I highly doubt it!!!

If it is, then good for him. For once, I approve of a decision he made. I think this'll be a cool way to approach the game and I am looking forward to the playoffs next season with the new format.

This one kinda came by and caught me off guard. What was the motivation behind the realignment?

19wingz 12-14-2011 01:06 PM

Franchise move from Atlanta to Winnipeg. Which team from the Central were they going to move to the Eastern Conference and how would they realign those divisions...then this came about.

jordanc0856 12-20-2011 08:11 PM

Ahhh, that makes sense. Oh Wings, I picked Michigan in my college bowl pick 'em sheet, so I need some good mojo from you.

19wingz 12-20-2011 10:48 PM

I'm always sending them good mojo. They just have to choose to listen to it!!

jordanc0856 01-26-2012 12:54 PM

Wings, did I read the article correctly that said the Player's Union rejected the realignment plan??? If so, I wonder why.

19wingz 01-26-2012 07:42 PM

Ya, they're delaying the realignment. Not sure why, though.

Saint Dagame 01-26-2012 08:10 PM

I would guess it is to let people used to the idea

19wingz 01-27-2012 07:32 AM

A couple articles I read said they are shifting the blame from owners to players and vice versa. So I don't really know who is to blame. Maybe Saint is right, get used to it then start it in 2013. I have a feeling some players in the 8 team divisions didn't like the 7 team division idea because of the point I mentioned in the initial post about the playoffs. I don't know. I still like the idea, so I hope they go through with it in '13, then.

Doesn't the current CBA expire after this season?? Do you think somebody may be delaying the realignment plan in order to use it as a "bargaining chip" for the next negotiation????

19wingz 01-30-2012 05:18 PM

I'm not sure on that, to be honest...

jordanc0856 01-31-2012 06:15 PM

I just read that the current CBA expires this September. I'm thinking there may be something involving that. Which side uses it is beyond me. I just hope it doesn't turn out like the last CBA (dark, dark days in the NHL).

19wingz 01-31-2012 06:25 PM

If they ever go there again (which they won't), the league will never build itself back up. It's on a rise (slow, sure, but a rise none the less). Another dark CBA will destroy it for good.

jordanc0856 01-31-2012 06:34 PM

Where else could they go for television coverage? The last CBA dispute killed the contract with ESPN.

19wingz 01-31-2012 06:37 PM

Honestly, I was happy the league cut ties with ESPN or vice versa. They never got proper attention from the network anyways. ESPN is too involved in their love affair with the NBA.

NBCSports now will hopefully amp it up a little bit - with a more known name than Versus. The network, ever since the OLN name change to Versus, has given the NHL center stage. It's been great for fans.

jordanc0856 02-01-2012 09:16 PM

I really hope so about NBC. They usually don't start playing airing games here until after the first of the year. I have to get the premium cable package to get Versus. I just hope (and I've said this before) the CBA negotiations go much better this time around.

19wingz 02-02-2012 03:07 AM

It's no longer Versus and they are expanding. You might already have NBC Sports Network and not even know it.

jordanc0856 02-02-2012 07:58 PM

Don't have it, and I'd know if we did. My cable company does a very good job of telling e very single extra channel they're charging us for (voluntary or nonvoluntary)!!!

19wingz 03-15-2013 07:42 AM

Well this is quite an old thread but there is a realignment proposed and accepted!

Isaac 03-18-2013 01:00 PM

Don't know much about this stuff, but why would they put the two teams in florida with "C" instead of "D" since they are separated on the map??

Devin 03-18-2013 01:43 PM

FL is in a tough division.

Yellowdog 03-18-2013 02:13 PM

Doesn't really matter where everybody plays, the Penguins will win the Stanley Cup for next five years anyway.

19wingz 03-18-2013 02:57 PM

I'm not even taking that bait. lol

Sheldon 03-18-2013 03:08 PM

Yeah, I'm not touching that one...

FL is in a SUPER TOUGH division now. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out over the coming seasons.

19wingz 03-18-2013 03:11 PM

A part of me appreciate this so the Wings don't have the incredibly insane travelling, but we are losing a lot of Western rivalries this way. Hopefully we can rekindle quite a few since half of the O6 are in the "C" Division.

Yellowdog 03-28-2013 08:58 AM

I think we can now all agree, with the recent Penguins trades, that this season is officially in the books.

19wingz 03-28-2013 02:20 PM

I'm in denial, but holy shit. The Pens are STACKED.

All times are GMT -7. The time now is 01:08 PM.
