Okay, I did a little research, and I may have found the answer (and Wingz, feel free to correct me). Acid reflux is when stomach acid splashes up out of the stomach into the esophagus. This can be caused by the sphincter muscle separating the two (via a "valve") opening too soon or not closing fast enough. Either way, it's the stomach acid splashing up into the esophagus that causes acid reflux. GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) is the repetitive and long term occurrences of acid reflux, which can cause various health issues. I think.
