Default ! ! ! ! ! Happy Thanksgiving! ! ! ! ! !

Many people can look fondly upon Thanksgiving memories. For many, lifelong traditions are established from this greatest of annual feasts.

Thanksgiving is a home filled with family and friends. The smell of competing aromas wafting throughout the house, each more wonderful than the last (turkey cooking all day, pecan, apple or pumpkin pies, and fresh baked bread), and all threatening to overwhelm each arriving person.

Thanksgiving was as much about the message of gratitude and joy of the many blessings we had received over the last year. Before we began eating, we did a round robin discussion of the things we were thankful for in our lives.

With six kids to feed, my parents held to the basic staples of the day: a turkey, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, stuffing and that ever amazing gravy. Cranberry sauce was seldom in short supply. Dessert was always vanilla ice cream heaped atop pumpkin or pecan pie. Martinelli's Cider for the kids and wine for the adults.

As we grew and learned to do our own culinary tasks, we each sought to bring our own special touch to Thanksgiving. I have a fondness for Brussels sprouts and regularly brought some variation of that dish to the family table. My sister was a rice fanatic and brought her own taste to the table. Each of us created a niche food that we proudly brought to the table on Thanksgiving.

To this day, if we can get together for Thanksgiving (which is rare as we are scattered across this great nation), we will make our special dish for the family. I share my creation at my own table and keep the tradition alive. My wife has managed to obtain recipes from some of my siblings and makes tribute dishes in their honor. Our older children have been emboldened by their own recent attempts to keep this tradition alive.

We may not be rich, but we are still blessed!

Regardless of the traditions you uphold on this special day, I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

i love watching families grow....

my family is LARGE!!! I am the daughter of the only girl (3 boys)..
my grandmother had 12 bros and sisters... so our gatherings were, well... lets just say, tiring... LOL
the house that my mother grew up in, is now mine, and my family goes there EVERY thanksgiving... i have spent every one there for 50 years... sans the year i lost my mom...
the food is traditionally southern... minus turkey... we arent turkey peoples, we like ham
'dressin', potato salad (NO MUSTARD), mac and cheese, green bean casserole, cranberry sauce, of course, lemon supreme cake and or pecan pie...

all from scratch no less.... you show up with something from a box and youre banished LOL shunned for life...
