Default Full Iraq War Withdrawl

Quote:
President Obama confirmed plans to have all U.S. troops out of Iraq by Jan. 1, formally ending the war that began more than eight-and-a-half years ago and has taken more than 4,400 American lives.

"After nearly nine years, America's war in Iraq will be over," Obama said at the White House, adding that most U.S. troops will be "home for the holidays."

Obama noted that he pledged to end the Iraq war during his 2008 presidential campaign.

The president spoke in the White House briefing room after holding a secure video conference with Iraq prime minister Nouri al-Maliki. Obama said he and the Iraqi leader are in "full agreement about how to move forward."

The U.S. has had a long-standing agreement to withdraw all combat troops from Iraq by the end of this year, but officials from both countries had discussed maintaining a U.S. residual force to train Iraqi forces.

But the U,S, eventually balked at maintaining a residual force because Iraq has refused to grant American troops legal immunity in Iraqi courts.

Obama praised the U.S. troops for their efforts in Iraq, and noted the announcement came a day after the death of former Libya dictator Moammar Gadhafi, bringing that conflict to an end.

The president also noted he is planning to withdraw U.S. troops from Afghanistan, a process hoped to be completed by 2014.

Obama inherited the Iraq and Afghanistan wars from predecessor George W. Bush.

Interesting times are coming to Iraq.

You are so right about Iraq......Wow! It really is to much turmoil over there. I heard that the troops would be added to Afghanistan.....Hmmmm....I have never understood Iraq's anger with the US after we helped them with the Iran/Kuwait war....I don't know...I wonder about those people sometimes....As I am sure they wonder about us...LOL

I'm sure there will be some that get added to Afghanistan, probably the ones that haven't been out there so long. Most are supposed to come home. That should save us some money too.

Those Iraqi's will never be able to have that country the way the civilized countries need it to be. Sad, but true.

Oh no way. Whether we are there or not, they're screwed, at least for my lifetime, and probably my grandchildren's grandchildren lifetimes. Maybe someday, but not for a long long time. Look at Israel and Palestine. Will that ever end? Maybe... close to the point the world ends or something.

Rather optimistic, aren't we?

In all fairness, I don't know enough about state-building to cast judgment whether or not Iraq will fail. In spite of all dire warnings, Pakistan has lasted beyond Musharraf. The State Dept., CIA, DoD, etc. all drew up plans entitled: "After Musharraf". They also did that after Tito in Yugoslavia.

And clearly that worked out well.

As far as Afghanistan goes...the issue is no longer Afghanistan. Look to its neighbor. That's where the problem is. Afghanistan holds no chance in hell of being fixed until Pakistan is taken care of.

Iraq and Afghanistan are not Pakistan and Yugoslavia. They are still practically in the Stone Age, especially Afghanistan.

It refers to the instability that would come undone if their leaders came out. Much like Saddam.

Moreover, Pakistan is worse than Iraq. They cannot handle their terrorists in the west-side and a nuclear weaponized state. They are in constant conflict with India over the Kashmir region.

Yugoslavia was the reason we had WWI with the eruption in the Balkans. The threat of instability there had NATO worried, which is why they ultimately intervened for fear that another situation could erupt in Europe.

In the cases I used I'm trying to say that the State Dept. cannot effectively design plans well, nor can the U.S. military for that manner.

I think we are talking about two different things.
