Default Shadowboxes

Sad day at the parents house today. After my grandpa died we took a tree from his farm, a pine tree (he grew Christmas trees and sold them), and planted it in my parents backyard but it's grown too big so it had to be chopped down. I managed to scavage pine cones, sawdust, pine needles and small pieces of wood from the tree and want to make a cute shadowbox for my dad for Christmas. Any ideas?

Okay, some backstory. You know the tree itself came from his farm in rural Iowa, from a lot of Christmas trees. This was his dream home/farm, three ponds, pigs, cows, fields, and after he passed and we walkeed the land for the last time we discovered he had a penchant for parking cars he was done with in various spots around the farm.

That is a wonderful idea KR...Mom had a holly tree she absolutely LOVED...dad had said when she dies he was getting rid of it...well the tree is gone! There was two pieces that were about two feet tall...I brought them home and planted them in my front yard....A little girl was playing in my front yard, her Mom was in one of those riding scooters...Well the next day I went out and she had broke it...It broke my heart, They other is still OK for now....I planted it in her honor....Your dad will LOVE it...But I have never done a shadow box, but it will mean more to him than anything you could buy him....I bet he has tears on Christmas morning....Do you have a picture of him on the farm maybe helping cut a tree down or helping a customer of your Dad and then one of your Grandad..Put those in there too!!!

Yeah, I was going to try and get a picture of Grandpa to put on the back part of it too. Plus I want to find a way to shellac (sp?) a picture onto the tree stump itself as well as engraving "In Memory Of" with grandpa's dob and dod.

You can find shadow boxes at a Hobby Lobby if you have any near you. There should also be some at Michaels. I think they're going to become more popular; I saw some at a scrapbooking show in May that were really nice.

But it sounds as though you need a deep one- which you can find at Hobby Lobby. If you don't have a HL there, let me know and maybe I can get one for you and ship it. I know this is important to you....

She can put a picture of the Grandfather in it (perhaps one when he was younger), and put the pine cones around it.

We have a HL down in Coralville and I did check at Michaels but like you said, I want a deeper one and the only deep ones they had were for mounting like footballs and shit. Thanks for the offer, that's so sweet!
