Exclamation 3 Million Miles?????

holy shit!!!!

BAY SHORE, NY (RNN) A car that has already set records for durability is on the verge of another mark - 3 million miles.

The 1966 Volvo P1800S is about 34,000 short of the number, according to the Associated Press. Its driver, Irv Gordon, bought the red two-seater new for $4,150 and has been working out the odometer ever since.

He plans to hit 3 million sometime next year.

"I feel like I'll be dead long before the car," Gordon told the AP.

Although the miles flipped back to zero on the car's six-digit counter - twice - Gordon has verification of it through maintenance records. Ten years ago, he and his Volvo set the Guinness World Record for highest vehicle mileage.

The mark was made at a mere 2 million miles.

In 2002, LA Times reported Gordon completed his first million in 1987, thanks to his love of travel and a 125-mile daily commute for the teacher. He got to 2 million miles 15 years later.

As a retiree, the driver has stepped up his usage of the car and averages between 85,000 and 100,000 miles per year. He credits strict adherence to the manufacturer's schedule and oil changes every 3,000 miles for keeping it on the road.

He also carries around plenty of spare parts he might need. The engine is original, but it has been rebuilt twice.

Volvo took notice of the car and sponsored the '02 celebration as Gordon hit his second million. Since then, he has made several appearances at car shows and starred in his own promotional video for the company.

Naturally, the car has a specialized license plate. It reads "MILNMILER."

For those who want to challenge Gordon's record, Consumer Reports has several auto-related informational videos on its website, including one of car care myths.

They include advice on how to keep a car on the road and looking good in a more cost-efficient way, such as:

*Most vehicles can go 7,500 miles or more before an oil change is needed.
*If your brake fluid level is low, get your brake system checked. Simply refilling could mask a larger problem.
*Car batteries may take hours to recharge after a jumpstart.
*Do not use dishwashing liquid to wash a car.

My Sonett just won its third trophy for highest mileage from the Swedish Car Fest - 471,000+ miles! on the original engine. (I lost one year to a guy with 750,000 miles.) And yes, I change my oil every 3,000 miles.

3,000,000 is a lot of miles! I'm impressed.
