Default National Popular Vote - Explain Please

So the governor of my state, who's an asshole, doesn't want the national popular vote. He says that the smaller, lesser populated states wouldn't have as much of a say. As I understand it, with the popular vote, EVERY vote counts because the candidates who have the most votes wins....which is what I'd logically think an election should be.

So why are people saying less densely populated states wouldn't get as much of a say with the popular vote and actually, as I understand it, the states with a higher population benefit MORE from the current system and the smaller states don't....so if you're a smaller state wouldn't you WANT the popular vote?

Oh he is, was our governor back in the 80's...back then his kid was driving drunk and killed someone doing it.

But I still don't get his argument in this issue.

The voice of the smaller states is diluted because where would a politician concentrate their time at? The states with the larger populations, where they can get more votes to make up for the states they are ignoring.

Plus, most of the time the popular vote does equal the electoral college vote.

The electoral college exists because the founding fathers thought the public was too stupid.

You can see this debate play out in the creation of the Senate and the House of Representatives as well.

I must be fucked in the head then because I still think the popular vote is the better, more authentic way to go. We may not have been subject to Bush Jr. if it were in place, in fact the first term we wouldn't have been.

The Electoral College was needed back when it was created. It isn't needed anymore. It's outdated and stupid. That said, you will never find a Republican elected official that would want to go popular vote, because they would lose many (not all) elections (as far as President goes.)

As far as states being ignored, they already are. The Republican Candidates mainly focus on states that have a tendency to vote Republican, and the Democrats focus on the states that tend to vote Democrat. I would like to see the candidates focus on all of us. Course, I would also like to see the candidates stop telling me what the other guy did/will do, who is to blame for the past etc. and rather tell me what they plan on doing in the future, with details. Pipe dream, I know.
