Default Marriage v. Another Word

I've had it up to here with this debate.

It is called 'marriage' because there is no other word in the English lexicon that has the same meaning. 'Domestic Partnership' didn't do a damn thing on a Federal Level until the repeal of DOMA in the UNITED STATES. That is where I am speaking of, the rules and such are different elsewhere. If it was not specifically listed as 'marriage' under DOMA the US government was allowed to not file joint tax returns, etc. That is why the word 'marriage' needs to be used, because of three reasons.

1. The fucking connotation that surrounds it. Everyone knows what 'marriage' is and what it entails. That includes spousal visitation in the hospital, joint tax returns, and adoption procedures. These are the legal ramifications that I am talking about.

2. States, again I am speaking of the United States and the FEDERAL SYSTEM, can disregard another state's laws. If I got married in Illinois tomorrow, it is not recognized in Ohio. Thus, the only way to solve the problem is to have 'marriage' be used because Domestic Partnership or some derivation thereof. It entails different things.

3. As I have already stated there is no other word in the English lexicon for 'marriage'. Partnership? That would be disabused in a court of law. Marriage is understood. Yes, it is traditional and conservative but sometimes you can't break millenia of a word being used.

And, now, I am going to address something else.

I stand behind what I say, not because I am always right nor because I don't apologize. Quite a few here know that not to be true. It is because I am arrogant and smart enough to know when to dig my heels in about a matter. That is what is happening here, and I am not going to relent an inch. As unconventional as the LGBT community is, this isn't an 'in-house' matter. We are playing in a hierarchy that has been created for centuries and simply existing goes against that let alone demanding equality.

So you can take your sighs, and bullshit and shove them straight up your ass.

See... this is where I'm having a problem with the debate. I get what you are saying Sphinx, I'm not understanding Robbie's side of it all.

He said "We are fighting to be different" so why use the word marriage. My question, why are you fighting to be different? Aren't we all different in some way already? Are you fighting to be different because you love the same gender? I just don't get that statement.

Second, would it be better if the word was Marriagatini? Do we need to fight for a new word so that you can file the tax returns together, or visit your loved one in the hospital? Or... should you be so different that you cannot adopt, cannot file together, cannot visit one another? Or is it just the term the law uses that you don't like?

I'm just not understanding his argument I guess.

Zach...the only one continuing endlessly with this is you. I believe we should have all the same rights and benefits, I just don't like that its called marriage. This opinion is mine, please give it up.

Ok so wait, I was right then... Your argument is that if it were called marriagatini it would be ok.... Same rights and benefits, just a different name? Right?

I'm just curious, mostly because you are the first gay man I've "met" who doesn't like the word marriage, but what about the word are you not pleased with? Or rather, why do you not feel that word should be used?

I'm genuinely asking here.

How would "common-law marriage" fit in here? Or I think the Latin phrase for it is "sui juris" which (according to wikipedia) means "of one's own right". I know I"m not privy to the entirety of the coversation. I was just wondering if this had anything to do with it???
