In this state, if someone is breaking into your home you have the right to defend yourself and your property, which means that you can kill them with no criminal ramifications. I don't know all of the details, so I don't know if they have to be breaking into your home or if they just have to be on your property. From a legal standpoint, you're better off killing them than just wounding them, because they can still sue you in civil court. It doesn't seem fair, but since criminal and civil court are completely separate, it would be a valid case and the outcome would completely depend on the judge. Even if you kill them the family can still sue, but unless they were with the person as he was entering your property, they wouldn't have much of a case.

Maybe this is very cynical of me to say, but what makes anyone think discrimination will cease?

For tolerance to exist, there has to be some notion of intolerance.

Otherwise, how do you define tolerance?

Discrimination won't cease. The human race is highly flawed.

Ignorance will always be present. ALWAYS. Stereotyping and racism will always be present. I hate to say it, but it's true. As stated, the human race is flawed.

That said, there is still something to be said that something like this very thing is happening in 2012. I just cannot wrap my head around this. It's not like Trayvon broke into Zimmerman's home and Zimmerman took a shot and killed him because Trayvon was breaking and entering. That's a different story. This is a story of a man who consciously pursued, followed, calculated his move to shoot (probably with the intent to kill?) this mysterious man who made it past the gates in this community. I just cannot wrap my head around this and I cannot wait and see how the law tackles this one.

What's sad is at the end of the day ... no matter what happens to Zimmerman, Trayvon's family will be without Trayvon. All thanks to this unjustifiable act. What's worse ... this happens all the time and 99% of the cases go unnoticed.

I'm ready for the national attention to shift gears from this to when Snooki announces she's actually having twins.

I agree. If someone was breaking into my home, then yeah, I should have the right to kill him. Who the hell knows what his intentions would have been... would he have killed me first? I think the law here is like Kristin's. Matter of fact, from what I understand... if you kill the dude, and he happens to get out into the backyard before he dies, then you need to drag his ass back in the house.

In this case, however, this guy attacked this other guy under assumption that he was looking at houses. He didn't break in anywhere and had no intention of doing so. The dude just "thought" he might do it, and so far, that has been enough to keep him out of jail. If all our laws were based on assumptions, this would be a very bad place to live.

it was on my local news last night. and now that jessie jackson is involved, i hate to say, it loses its importance. he cries wolf a lot of times for no good reason, which totally screws up the stuff he SHOULD be bitching about..... (like this)
JJ is not liked here at all, so.... needless to say, no one takes it seriously.

its times like this, and political years, that make me HATE living here!!!!!
when you have an entire region of the country that still teaches how to hate someone's skin color, it wont EVER change, or even get better.
the only difference in my state between now and the 60s? the KKK just keeps it behind closed doors and more discreet.
its really really sad and pisses me off soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo bad!!!!!!!!!!

and in regards to this:
As stated, the human race is flawed.

Eve and that fuckin' apple!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In VA you can kill someone that comes into your house....But you cannot kill them for being on your property...So, I was always told if someone is trying to break in you had better drag them in your house...LOL

Not making light of your story at all Wingz, that boy should be alive today and the bastard that shot him should be sitting in jail....
