The broadcast networks are detailing their plans for evening news and primetime Friday coverage of the tragic shooting spree at an Aurora, Colo. movie theater that left 12 people dead and at least 38 others injured.
On ABC, Diane Sawyer will this evening anchor a special edition of ABC World News, with David Muir reporting live from the scene in Colorado. At 10 pm, Chris Cuomo will anchor a special live edition of 20/20, also from Aurora. Nightline, at 11:35 pm, will feature live team coverage from Colorado.
CBS Evening News anchor Scott Pelley will broadcast live this evening, from Aurora, while a special 48 Hours: Tragedy in Aurora will replace regularly scheduled programming at 8 pm.
On NBC, Brian Williams will present Nightly News live from Aurora, while Ann Curry will anchor a special edition of Dateline at 9/8c.
The shooting happened at a midnight Thursday premiere of The Dark Knight Rises. The shooter, identified by police as James Holmes, 24, of Aurora, arrived at the theater toting at least four firearms — an “AK type” rifle, a shotgun and two handguns, says CNN. Holmes first lobbed a canister of tear gas through a rear exit door before entering, wearing a gas mask, and opening fire.
Holmes was arrested shortly after the massacre, without resisting.

I usually would copy and paste this all here, but I think the pictures just must go with the story. This is so very sad. Makes you sit down and think about your life.

Ok, that celeb boutique has since apologized and cited that their PR is not in the US, so they had no idea why Aurora was trending. Definitely damage control. On well.

Twelve people were killed and 59 were injured in Aurora, Colo., during a sold-out midnight premier of the new Batman movie "The Dark Knight Rises" when 24-year-old James Holmes unloaded four weapons' full of ammunition into the unsuspecting crowd.

The number of casualties makes the incident the largest mass shooting in U.S. history.

Holmes, a graduate student at a nearby college with a clean arrest record, entered the movie auditorium wearing a ballistics helmet, bullet-proof vest, bullet-proof leggings, gas mask and gloves. He detonated multiple smoke bombs, and then began firing at viewers in the sold-out auditorium, police said today.

Bullets from the spree tore through the theater and into adjoining theaters, where at least one other person was struck and injured. Ten members of "The Dark Knight Rises" audience were killed in theater, while two others died later at area hospitals. Numerous patrons were in critical condition at six local hospitals, the Aurora police said this afternoon.

Holmes was apprehended within minutes of the 12:39 a.m. shooting at his car behind the theater, where police found him in full riot gear and carrying three weapons, including a AR-15 assault rifle, which can hold upwards of 100 rounds, a Remington 12 gauge shot gun, and a .40 Glock handgun. A fourth handgun was found in the vehicle. Agents from the federal bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms are tracing the weapons.

According to police sources, Holmes told the officers arresting him that he was "The Joker," referring to the villain in the second installment of the Batman movie trilogy, "The Dark Knight." He also warned police that he had booby-trapped his apartment, leading officers to evacuate the Aurora apartment building.

Police Chief Dan Oates said today that police and bomb squads have found a large number of explosive devices and trip wires at Holmes' apartment and have not yet decided how to proceed without setting off explosions.

Updated: Jul 21, 2012 8:34 AM CDT AURORA, CO (RNN) - Law enforcement remained outside the "booby-trapped" apartment of James Eagan Holmes, the man accused of The Dark Knight Rises premiere shooting.

Officials said possible explosive and chemical devices inside the suspect's home have prevented them from safely entering the home, CNN reported. They included bottles filled with unknown liquids and what appeared to be mortar rounds.

A "web of wires" has been set to trip the devices, according to the report.

Members of local police and fire departments were on scene Saturday, as well as the FBI and bomb specialists. On Friday, police chief Dan Oates called the situation "vexing."

The Denver Post stated surrounding buildings were evacuated when authorities confirmed the apartment had apparent IEDs inside. Holmes reportedly told police his home had been rigged to explode when they detained him after the shooting.

Loud techno music began to play at the apartment early Friday, around the time the murders took place, according to Denver Post. A neighbor told reporters she found the door ajar when she went to ask Holmes to turn it down, but she did not go inside.

The man suspected of killing at least 12 people and injuring 58 more at a movie theater will make his first court appearance on Monday.

Police say Holmes, 24, purchased four guns at local gun shops, as well as 6,000 rounds of ammunition on the internet, in the last 60 days.

He's the lone suspect in the murders at the midnight premiere of The Dark Knight Rises.

"We are not looking for any other suspects," Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates said. "We are confident that he acted alone. However, we will do a thorough investigation to be absolutely sure that is the case, but at this time, we are confident he acted alone."

As of Friday evening, 30 people remained in area hospitals, 11 in critical condition.

"It's an act that defies description," said CO Gov. John Hickenlooper.

Holmes reportedly had recently withdrawn from a Ph. D. program the University of Colorado Denver.

At his undergrad alma mater, the University of California Riverside, where he graduated with honors, Chancellor Timothy P. White said "People are trying to digest the news."

"Academically, he was at the top of the top. He distinguished himself from an academic point of view during his four years with us," White said.

CNN reported all the guns Holmes used in the shooting were purchased legally.

Ironically, that shooting really was a job for Batman. Too bad he wasn't real.
