Okay, I did a little research, and I may have found the answer (and Wingz, feel free to correct me). Acid reflux is when stomach acid splashes up out of the stomach into the esophagus. This can be caused by the sphincter muscle separating the two (via a "valve") opening too soon or not closing fast enough. Either way, it's the stomach acid splashing up into the esophagus that causes acid reflux. GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) is the repetitive and long term occurrences of acid reflux, which can cause various health issues. I think.

I have GERD. It's annoying. It sometimes feels as if something is stuck in my throat. Just ugh.

I used to use Aciphex, but not any longer since my insurance won't cover it. Now I use Nexium when I need to.

Went in to get it checked. The doctor thinks acid reflux caused inflammation in my esophagus, which is probably why something felt "stuck" in there. She put me on 75mg of ranitidine (acid reducer) a day for a week to see if it helps control the inflammation. Five days in, and I feel much better. I'm just not sure if she will have me on the ranitidine for the long-term.
