In a dramatic victory for President Barack Obama, the Supreme Court upheld the 2010 health care law Thursday, preserving Obama’s landmark legislative achievement.

The majority opinion was written by Chief Justice John Roberts, who held that the law was a valid exercise of Congress’s power to tax.

The decision came as a sharp rebuff and disappointment to congressional Republicans, many of whom had expected the court to strike down at least some parts of the law.

Passage of the law in 2010 had come at a high political cost, with 14 House Democrats in competitive districts losing their seats in the 2010 elections in part due to their votes for the bill and six Democratic Senate candidates who’d voted for the bill also lost their elections in 2010.

✯✰✯The mandate is Constitutional✯✰✯.
They can't make you buy it, but they can make you pay a penalty tax for not!
The entire Affordable Care Act is upheld and Constitutional!

That is BS....I don't think the gov't should make you do anything...I think the only thing that should have been upheld is preexisting conditions...I see increase in my insurance premiums and less benefits.....

How is it any different from the government forcing you to buy car insurance?

ETA:

Obama victory. Also just read this morning that Obama is leading Romney by 9 percentage points in Ohio in a new poll by Quinnepec.

Like car insurance, not having it hurts others so I'm all for the government doing this. The alternative is too much strain on our system.

Sphinx I've always wondered the same thing. I am conflicted about the notion that Govt can "force" us to buy anything, especially when our premiums just pad bottom lines for corporations but I fully believe our healthcare needs some sort of help. There are things about this I cheer loudly, and other aspects that give me pause.

I won't venture to say that I am 100% behind Obamacare - I am behind the intentions. I find it disgusting that Republicans want to privatize Social Security and Medicare. As if THAT would fix the problem of escalating health costs! No, what needs to happen is these insurance companies be brought to their knees. I've heard/seen too many stories of people not being covered, going bankrupt, not being able to be covered due to pre-existing conditions, etc. In my eyes, that is an injustice.
