Okay, this isn't a medical issue, but it's something I've always wondered about. What's the difference (if any) between an M.D. and a D.O.?

Once Joe sees this, I'm sure he'll have the proper answer for you.

This is true to a certain extent. Medicine in general is going towards primary care these days and MDs are playing that role just as much. That's the nature of medicine today, especially the preventive aspect.
Unless you are in a very rural area, there is little difference between MD and DO docs today. DOs do have that extra course that the article above mentions. That class is Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM). Basically using the skeletal system to sometimes treat ailments. It will appear to many not familiar with it as "chiropractic" practice but even as a non-DO, I know there is more involved there. But that is the best way I can describe it. I know plenty of MDs who try to use a holistic approach and avoid medication if not necessary and I know plenty of DOs who don't practice OMM at all and just approach medicine like any other doctor. In fact, there are discussions happening right now to merge the accrediting bodies of both MD and DO residency training programs. Clear it up?

Thank you very much for all that! It does clear it up. I live in a rural area where the family practice clinic is fairly small where a P.A. sees the caseload, but the clinic is overseen by a D.O. from a hospital the next town over. I just wasn't sure of the differences (if any) between the M.D. and D.O., and you detailed that very well, so again, thanks!!!
