I think my 4-year old is having some growing pains. He's been complaining of discomfort in his joints (mainly knees and elbows and occasionally hips). Doesn't this pretty much come from muscles and tendons stretching as the bones grow? Other than pain relievers (ibuprofen, Tylenol, etc.), is there anything else I could do for him?

When do these pains occur? Any particular time of the day? Does the discomfort get progressively better or worse as the day continues? 4 years is a little young for growing pains, but it can still happen.
Any redness, swelling of the joints?

I don't remember any of my children complaining of joint pain as they grew up. But then I think Dr Joe here would have to have a little more information to tell you much at all.

My oldest has had them off and on. He grew eight inches one year and it was rough! We gave him Advil and he would sit and watch TV with a heating pad on his legs. He would beg for the heating pad at night but I wouldn't let him sleep with it. He seemed to think it was the most help. Maybe a warm bath would help when the pain flares up.
